I recently canceled my USAA auto insurance and switched to Geico. I’m saving $350 every 6 months for the exact same coverage (actually I had full glass on the USAA insurance but that’s only a few dollars more). I just wanted to write a bit about the phone call I made to USAA.
I first called to ask exactly how I cancel because I’ve never done this before; been with USAA for a long time now. The woman (Katy) told me she can handle it but I better make sure that I don’t let my coverage lapse because New York is very strict about that. I told her that my Geico insurance goes into effect tomorrow and she asked if she could try to match what Geico was offering. After she looked through my quote she admitted defeat and asked that I call her back after I confirmed that all is in order with my Geico insurance.
The next day I called her back and she quickly canceled my USAA auto insurance. She didn’t proceed to sell their other services. She just said that she hopes in 6 months that I come back to see what USAA has to offer and that “once a member always a member”. It was refreshing to not do the song and dance that typically comes from cancelling a service.
Also I should note that the USAA website blows Geico’s out of the water but it’s not like I’ll use either too often. Also USAA has much better payment plans (no fees for paying monthly like Geico does but I paid in full). I still use USAA for my renter’s and valuable item insurance and have no plans for switching. If you are eligible to use USAA insurance I highly suggest you sign up. My father was in the army which made me eligible. Since I signed up, when Megen and I get married she too will be eligible as will our children, nobody else has to serve as long as we “keep the chain going”.
